This LGBT+ History Month (U.K.) S P Clark is sharing 20 new poems to mark the 20th anniversary of this historic celebration of the LGBT+ community and its contribution to society. Each poem celebrates S P Clark's own journey navigating his way through the world as a member of the LGBT+ Community. The three poems here today (Apologies, Apologise, Unapologetic) are short pieces that look at the poets relationship with the word 'sorry' through his LGBT+ lens.

Apologies

Written to coincide with LGBT+ History Month (U.K.) 2025

There was a time when I made my apologies

Sorry for letting you down

Sorry for not being what you expected

Sorry if holding hands is too much

Sorry if flirting is too much

Sorry if who I am sets your anger aflame

Sorry if who I surround myself with seems strange to you

There was a time when I “corrected” my course to be just like you

There was a time when I made my apologies

My apologies to all of you.

Apologise

Written to coincide with LGBT+ History Month (U.K.) 2025

The little gang of righteousness with their boots of steel and fists of iron

Cascading down upon my body as it lay, where you threw it, on the ground

Unable to erect myself and unable to foetal-coil to safety’s haven

Where all I hear is the violent vocabulary and not a delicate calming sound

You spew forth your vitriol with spit foaming from your poisoned tongues

And kick me so it’s hard to find the air from within my lungs

The little gang of righteousness with a righteousness I can’t recognise

Screaming obscenities like faggot, shit-stabber; you force me to apologise.

Unapologetic

Written to coincide with LGBT+ History Month (U.K.) 2025

Now I dance with chin held high and sparkles at my feet

No kenophobia, well maybe some, but flirtatious with anyone I meet

I kiss my guy or girl, I don’t think twice, on a crowded street

And if you want to pass your judgement on to me, grab a ticket, join the line, take a seat,

For I am now so fully me that I no longer need against you to compete

I’m unapologetic in myself, I myself am beautifully complete.
