This LGBT+ History Month (U.K.) S P Clark is sharing 20 new poems to mark the 20th anniversary of this historic celebration of the LGBT+ community and its contribution to society. Each poem celebrates S P Clark's own journey. Today he looks at the idea of the individuals we choose to spend our life with (in Chosen Family), and the comfort and ease with which we can talk when we gather with our other LGBT+ friends (in When We Gather).

Chosen Family

Written to coincide with LGBT+ History Month (U.K.) 2025

My collection of misfits are where they all fit in

The outcasts being pulled back in

The judgmental are locked behind a solid door

So that inside we can dance to the sound of our splendour.

My assortment of offbeats are beating their own drum

The strangers all becoming known

The rejective ejected to stand in the cold

So that in the warm we can revel in our fearless fold.

My collection of misfits are where they all fit in

The outcasts being pulled back in

The judgmental are locked behind a solid cage

So that inside we can heal and emancipate our rage.

When We Gather

Written to coincide with LGBT+ History Month (U.K.) 2025

When we gather, my rainbow friends, it’s a joyous thing

I can talk to you about coming out and you’ll hear that familiar ring

You can tell me about your relationships and how you navigate the scene

I can tell you all my little bi-boy secrets – some personal and some obscene.

When we gather, my rainbow friends, it’s a magical time

I can talk of the fear I face and the times I just fall into line

You can tell me about your family in a way they will never comprehend

I can just let go and be myself, I don’t have to pretend.

When we gather, my rainbow friends, it’s a special night

I can tell how the world has grown dark and you’ll still shine a light

You can tell me of your frustration at our rights being snatched away

We will band and stand together: yesterday, tomorrow and today.
