What Will You Answer?

A Poem By Simon Clark

(Written to coincide with Bi-Visibility Day, 23rd September 2020)

A young girl says:

“So, when I’m older I’m going to get married…

…and then I’ll be carried over the threshold by my Prince.

Is that okay?”

What will you answer?

A young girl says:

“So, when I’m ready I’m going to have girlfriends…

….’cause everyone defends our right to love how we want to.

Is that correct?”

What will you answer?

A young girl says:

“So, if I decide to bring a boy home for tea…

…who will hold hands with me across the table as we eat.

Is that alright?”

What will you answer?

A young girl says:

“So, if in September I kissed Jane on lunch-break,

…who changed her name to Jake by the time the year was over.

You wouldn’t mind?”

What will you answer?

The answer should be the same,

“Whatever makes you happy”,

“Whatever makes you whole”,

“Whatever is the honest truth – don’t hide it in your soul”.

What will you answer?

However you answer – don’t stifle love with hate,

Don’t let hate burn through your heart,

And to that young girl who bravely asked,

Love who you love – let your happiness start.
