Death comes unexpectedly in many situations, takes us by surprise and leaves us with many memories, musings and melancholic thoughts. "Lights Out" attempts to navigate this.

Lights Out

A Poem by Simon Clark

As quick as the day in the depth of winter

As swift as laughter unfolding from the mouth of a child

As fast as the rain from a heavy black cloud

As speedy as the run towards a returning soldier

As hurried as the mouse from the plunging hawk

As rapid as the bullet from the chamber of a gun.

Life whizzes by; lights out for those once bright and sparkling eyes.

Unexpected darkness that dawns far too quick

Unforeseen teardrops oozing from ducts so steady and swift

Unpredicted pain that punches lightening fast

Unannounced neurons marching through dreams heavy and speedy

Unplanned predator called grief stole and hurried

Unanticipated wound drains emotion so rapid.

Life whizzes by; lights out for those once bright and sparkling eyes

Lights out without warning, no chance for goodbye.
