Blue Monday (17th January 2022) is supposedly the 'saddest day of the year'. The long winter, the grey skies and the cold can make us feel even more isolated and alone. We have also just gone through a period of celebration with Christmas, New Year and many other festivals and religious celebrations - and this can heighten our anxieties, financial worries and make everything seem harder. This poem, 'Just Talk', has been written to coincide with Blue Monday. I hope you all stay well and look after yourselves.

Just Talk

A Poem by Simon Clark

(Written to coincide with Blue Monday, 17th January 2022)

“Talking. It’s important and I wish I fucking did it.” – Arti Manani (Seven Sins)

Talk to your family,

If you can,

You never know they might just understand,

Just talk.

Talk to a friend,

You don’t have to take their advice,

They can just sit and listen, that might be nice,

Just talk.

Talk to a lover,

Hold them tight,

Feel safe at their shoulder as you fight your fight,

Just talk.

Talk to a stranger,

Sit down next to them on a bench,

Their judgement won’t matter but your heart might unclench,

Just talk.

Talk to a pet,

Natter while you prepare their food,

Unconditional love might balance your mood,

Just talk.

Talk to yourself,

Write down how you feel when you pick up a pen,

Say it in your head as you breathe gently and count to ten,

Just talk.

Please,

Please,

Please,

Just talk.

Thanks for listening.
