In 2021 S P Clark began working on a poetry collection based upon paintings: their meanings, their themes, their titles, their imagery and more. The collection, titled With a Stroke of the Pen, spawned a mini-collection (Clark Meets Munch) which follows a similar vein. To whet your appetite here is a poem under consideration for inclusion in the collection. Here is The Musicians.

The Musicians

Inspired by an artwork of the same name by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio

The melodious marauding of music makers billowing forth like a crisp spring breeze across the dirty streets of my town,

Elevating the grime that falls from the footwells in the treads of my shoes and engrains itself in the once silvery slab of paving underneath,

Rousing the rabble who cheerily chant their daily slog in rhythm with the percussive moaning lurching forth from the unseen buskers,

Footsteps pounding their bohemian breathless beat as the pedestrian procession passes upon the river of acid-rain-rotted pathways,

The acrid aroma of a smoke-swelled jazz dive exuding from the busking stage and seeping starkly to the swarms of sapiens forming a congregation,

Fixated in their fervour, a faction of folk all faceless in their passion for the factious lessons as they lean on the teachings amongst their fictitious family,

Enchanted by the musicians,

Bound to the beat.
