Today (April 22nd) is Earth Day; a day that for 50 years has been used to promote awareness for the protection of our planet. S P Clark, with this poem, presents a different slant on the day; through hard times, the planet and all its wonder can still be the saviour. For more information on Earth Day, just click here!

This Planet
S P Clark
There’s a blade of green grass that stands taller than any tower of brick I know
There’s a puddle that glistens like diamonds and catches the light from above
There’s a cloud refracting the light of the sun; making shapes so distinctive that a sculptor is cheered
There’s thunder so loud that the children all run away with a fear more terrifying than whenever the bogeyman appears
There’s wonder on this planet
There’s wonder all around.
Â
I have felt so low lately and all the mistakes I’ve made have crowded in around me
It’s as though all the doors to freedom from my past are locked and the key has been misplaced
I’ve let down too many people and the others see me as disgraced
That why I was lucky to step into the world today and see the sun shining amidst a cloudless blue
I realise how perfect this planet can be if only I look and see all that is around me.
Â
There’s a blade of green grass that dances and has more majesty than any soul I know
There’s a puddle that shimmers with more sparkle than all our precious gold
There’s a cloud refracting the light of the sun; making shapes so soft and clear that an artist’s brush can’t come near
There’s thunder so loud that the ground quakes with more fear than any ghost story can command
There’s wonder on this planet
There’s wonder all around.
